The name of the township comes from the word “freehold,” an English legal term meaning outright ownership of the property and land on which it stands. The borough of Freehold was the center of patriotic activity during the Revolutionary War.
Today, with a population of more than 12,000, this community – which sits halfway between New York City and Philadelphia – cohesively melds its rich past with the urban feel of the present.
Points of interest in this community include the Metz Bicycle Museum, home of the only known “Zimmy” created by Arthur Zimmerman; Freehold Borough High School, where Bruce Springsteen graduated in 1967; and the Freehold Public Library, one of the remaining Carnegie-funded libraries in the state.
